Dr Rauan Kaiyrzhanov is a research fellow from Kazakhstan who is interested in the genetics of rare neurological disorders in Central Asian and Transcaucasian countries. He instigated a scientific collaboration between IoN UCL and several medical universities as well as medical research centres from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. He has recruited many patients with rare and clinically interesting phenotypes of neurogenetic conditions from these countries to Synapse project. The collaboration between UCL and Central Asian/Transcaucasian countries will benefit both partners in enhancing genomic diagnosis skills in diverse population groups in all diseases, allow disease gene comparison, enabling future institutional links in sharing genomic techniques as they evolve, leading to significant benefit in health and impact to improve society and welfare.
